Οι ηφαιστειακοί χειμώνες είναι σχετικά συχνό, περίπου ανά αιώνα, φαινόμενο, μόνο που παλιότερα δεν μπορούσαν να εξηγήσουν γιατί συννέφιαζε και χιόνιζε χειμώνα-”καλοκαίρι”, όταν είχε εκραγεί ηφαίστειο στην άλλη άκρη της Γης...

Σε περίπτωση παρατεταμένης έκρηξης αναμένεται- εκτός από την απαγόρευση των πτήσεων- ένα φαινόμενο που ονομάζεται «ηφαιστειακός χειμώνας» κατά το οποίο το νέφος τής τέφρας εμποδίζει την ηλιακή ακτινοβολία να φτάσει στη Γη.

LONDON - A second, much larger volcano in Iceland is showing signs that it may be about to erupt, scientists have warned.

The eruption of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Iceland, and the travel chaos it has caused, is only a "small rehearsal", according to Iceland's President Olafur Grimsson.
